Gift Packaging Is a Different Job From Product Packaging

Most packaging has one job: protect the product and identify the brand. A gift box has three, and they pull against each other.

It has to protect what is inside, often multiple loose items rather than one. It has to look valuable enough that the recipient understands something deliberate happened before it reached them. And it has to open in a way that feels like an occasion rather than a chore, because the moment of opening is the entire point of the product.

That third requirement is where most stock gift packaging quietly fails. A box that needs a blade to open, or that spills its contents when the lid comes off, has undone the work the design was supposed to do. At Custom Boxes Zone Canada we build gift boxes around all three requirements at once, starting from your product dimensions and working outward to the structure, the insert, the closure and the finish.

The minimum order is 50 boxes. That is genuinely a first production run, not a pallet commitment, which matters in gifting more than most categories because so much of it is seasonal, campaign-driven or tied to a single event.

Choosing a Gift Box Structure

The structure decides how the box feels before anyone reads a word printed on it. These are the styles we produce most often for Canadian brands.

Rigid two-piece boxes, base and lid. The classic gift box. Built from 1.5mm to 3mm greyboard wrapped in printed art paper, specialty stock or textured linen, then delivered pre-assembled. The weight of the board does most of the work here: a rigid lid lifts with a slight resistance that people associate with expensive things. Strong, stackable and the safest default when you are unsure. Our rigid gift boxes page covers this style in more depth.

Magnetic closure boxes. A rigid box with a hidden magnet in the flap. The closure snaps shut with a sound and a small resistance, and that single detail is the reason this style dominates high-end corporate gifting and curated sets. Best for jewellery, watches, tech accessories, spirits and anything with a high perceived value that the packaging needs to underline.

Drawer and slide-out boxes. A tray that pulls out of an outer sleeve, sometimes with a ribbon pull. Slower to open than a lift-off lid, which is exactly the appeal. Good for narrow products, sets of small items and anything where you want to control the pace of the reveal.

Book-style boxes. Hinged like a hardcover, closing with a magnet or ribbon tie. Reads as considered and permanent, and recipients keep them, which quietly extends how long your branding stays in their space.

Window gift boxes. A die-cut aperture with a clear PET film insert, so the product is visible without being handled. Essential for retail shelf gifting, where the buyer needs to see what they are purchasing. We use APET and PETG film rather than PVC, because PVC yellows under UV light and its plasticisers can migrate out over time and leave a tacky residue on whatever is pressed against it. On a gift box that sits in a warehouse through a full pre-Christmas build, that difference is visible.

Folding gift cartons. Printed cardstock, shipped flat, assembled by hand. Far cheaper per unit than rigid and lighter to ship. The right choice for volume gifting, promotional runs and anything where the box is not meant to survive past the opening.

Gift mailers. Self-locking corrugated mailers printed inside and out, so the delivery itself becomes the gift presentation. This is what most direct-to-consumer and subscription brands actually need. See our corrugated mailer boxes and broader mailer packaging range.

Standard Gift Box Sizes

These are the dimensions we produce most frequently. Every one of them is a starting point, not a limit. Send us what is going inside and we will size the box around it at no charge.

Use case Suggested box size
Jewellery or small accessory 3.5 x 3.5 x 1.5 inches
Watch or single tech accessory 5 x 5 x 3 inches
Candle, single 4 x 4 x 5 inches
Skincare or cosmetic duo 7 x 5 x 2.5 inches
Chocolate or confectionery set 9 x 6 x 1.75 inches
Apparel gift box, folded garment 12 x 9 x 2 inches
Corporate hamper, four to six items 13 x 10 x 4 inches
Large presentation or launch kit 16 x 12 x 5 inches
Wine or spirits, single bottle 4 x 4 x 13 inches

A note on sizing that costs people money: measure your product at its tallest and widest point, including lids, pumps, ribbons and any packaging the item already has. Then add clearance for the insert. Measuring a product flat and ordering to that number is the single most common reason a first run does not fit.

Materials

Rigid greyboard, 1.5mm to 3mm. The premium standard. Wrapped in printed art paper, soft-touch stock or textured linen. Heavy, structural, and the material that makes a box feel like it cost something.

Cardstock, 16 pt to 24 pt. The workhorse for folding gift cartons. Smooth, bright, holds fine detail and cuts cleanly for windows.

Kraft, unbleached. Recyclable and honest-looking, Ink behaves differently on kraft than on white SBS, producing lower saturation and an earthier result. It suits handmade, artisan and sustainability-led gifting, and it is a poor choice if your brand colours need to reproduce exactly.

E-flute corrugated. Micro-fluted board that adds crush resistance without much weight. The right call for gift mailers and anything heavy travelling by courier.

Recycled and FSC-certified stocks. Available across the range, printed with soy and water based inks, with recycling guidance printable directly on the box.

Printing, Finishing and What Actually Gets Noticed

We print full CMYK offset and digital, with CMYK plus one or two PMS colours when brand colour has to match exactly across reorders. That matters more in gifting than elsewhere, because seasonal collections are usually reordered against last year's box, and a shade drift between runs is visible when the two sit side by side.

Finishing is where a gift box earns its price, and the discipline is choosing two or three details rather than all of them. Soft touch lamination creates a velvety surface that people notice with their hands before their eyes. Matte lamination is quiet, glare-free and resists fingerprints, which matters on a dark box that will be handled repeatedly. Gloss adds brightness and contrast. Foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV all work best applied selectively to a logo, a monogram or a single pattern element.

A common and effective combination for premium gifting: soft-touch matte across the whole box with a single foil-stamped logo. Restrained, expensive-looking, and it photographs well, which matters if the box will appear in product imagery or on social media.

Inserts: The Part Most Suppliers Skip

An insert is what separates a gift box from a box with things loose in it. It is also the part of the specification most likely to be underspecified, because it does not show up in a flat product photo.

Die cut cardstock inserts. Contoured to hold each item in its own recess. Lightweight, recyclable, and the standard for multi-item sets.

Rigid platforms with fabric or paper wrap. Used inside premium boxes to hold a single hero item at a raised angle so it presents when the lid comes off rather than sitting flat.

Foam inserts. Cut to shape for fragile items, glassware and electronics. Effective and not recyclable, which is a real trade-off for brands with sustainability claims on the box.

Moulded pulp trays. Recycled fibre moulded to the product shape. Distributes shock evenly, replaces foam, and reads as environmentally deliberate rather than cheap.

Ribbon pulls and dividers. Small structural additions that change the opening experience out of proportion to their cost.

Here is the practical consideration nobody mentions until it becomes a problem. A gift box with a five-compartment insert takes real time to pack. If you are assembling 2,000 corporate hampers with a small team in December, an insert that takes 40 seconds to load instead of 15 costs you over 13 hours of labour. Tell us the assembly volume when you order, and we will design the insert around your packing line, not just your product.

Who Orders Gift Boxes From Us

Retail brands are running seasonal gift sets for Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and Diwali, where the box has to sit on a shelf beside established competitors and win on presentation alone.

Corporate gifting and HR teams ordering employee welcome kits, client thank you boxes, milestone gifts and conference kits. Usually one campaign, usually a fixed headcount, usually needed by a date that cannot move. Our 50-unit minimum exists for exactly this buyer.

Ecommerce and subscription brands where every delivery is a gifting moment, whether the customer bought it for themselves or someone else.

Small makers and artisans selling at markets and through their own shopfronts, who need packaging that looks considered without a five-figure commitment.

Hamper and gift basket businesses, particularly around the holidays, need large multi-compartment structures that survive courier handling with several loose items inside.

Gift Packaging Across Our Range

Gift packaging overlaps with most of what we make, because almost anything can be given as a gift. If your product sits in one of these categories, the dedicated page will usually get you a more precise structure than a generic gift box.

Custom jewelery boxes for rings, chains and small high-value pieces, where the insert matters more than the box. Custom candle boxes and rigid candle boxes, which are among the most gifted products in Canada and need enough clearance for glass vessels. Chocolate boxes with compartment trays for confectionery sets. Custom soap boxes for handmade and artisan bath gifting. Custom perfume boxes and makeup boxes for beauty sets and fragrance gifting. Custom bath bomb boxes for spa and self care bundles. Custom bakery boxes for cookie tins, brownie boxes and edible gifting. Custom bottle boxes for wine, spirits and oil gifting. Custom shirt boxes and custom hat boxes for apparel gifting. And custom stickers if you want to seal a plain box with branded tape or a wax-style label rather than printing the whole structure.

How Ordering Works

Send your specs. Product dimensions, quantity, and what the box needs to do. If you are unsure of the size, tell us what is going on inside, and we will work it out for free.

Get a quote in 24 hours. One number, final. No die charges, no plate setup, no design markup. The advertised low unit price that grows on the invoice is standard practice in this industry, and it is not how we work.

Free design support. Send artwork in PNG, SVG, JPG, AI, PSD or PDF at 300 DPI. Our team builds the print-ready file, handles bleed and dielines, and flags anything that will cause trouble on press before it costs you a run.

Approve a 3D mockup. You see the box before a single sheet of board is cut. Physical samples available on request.

Production and delivery. Standard is 8 to 12 business days from proof of approval. Rush is 4 to 6 business days when flagged at order time. Free shipping across Canada with tracking, flat position, to your address, warehouse or fulfilment centre.

A Word on Timing Gift Orders in Canada

Gifting is the most deadline-driven packaging category there is, and the deadlines are immovable. A Christmas box that lands on December 20 is worthless.

Two things worth planning around. First, the clock starts at proof approval, not at order placement, so a two-week delay in signing off artwork is a two-week delay in production. Second, Canadian courier networks slow noticeably from late November through December, and winter weather across the Prairies and through Northern Ontario can add days to cross-country freight that nobody can promise around.

Our recommendation for holiday gifting: place the order by early October. For a spring campaign, six to eight weeks ahead. If you are already tighter than that, tell us the in-hand date up front, and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable rather than finding out together in week three.

Why Canadian Brands Choose Custom Boxes Zone

Fifty boxes minimum. Real enough for a corporate campaign, small enough to test a design before committing a season to it.

Transparent pricing. The quote is the invoice. No plate fees or die charges appearing at the end.

Free design support and a free 3D proof on every order, including first-time buyers with nothing but a logo and a rough idea.

Free shipping anywhere in Canada, from Toronto and Montreal to Vancouver and Calgary, with tracking and no freight surcharges.

A named contact, not a ticket queue. Same-hour answers, and someone still reachable after the pallet ships, which is when packaging questions actually come up.

Trusted by brands including Loblaws, Circle K, Safeway, Gildan and COWS Creamery, with a 5.0 Google rating across 40 reviews, most from customers on a repeat order.
