Six Jobs a Sticker Does in Packaging

Sticker projects go wrong when the material is chosen before the job is defined. Work out which of these you are solving, and the specification follows on its own.

Sealing the box. A branded seal across the closure of a mailer or a tuck-end carton does three things at once: it holds the box shut, it shows whether anyone opened it in transit, and it puts your logo at the exact point the customer's hands go. For tamper evidence specifically, a destructible or high-tack adhesive is what you want, because a seal that peels off cleanly is not evidence of anything.

Branding a plain box. This is the largest use case and the most commercially sensible one for a new brand. A plain kraft mailer with a well-designed sticker reads as deliberate and costs a fraction of a printed run. More on the economics below.

Labelling the product itself. Jars, bottles, soap bars, candle bases, tins and pouches all need a label carrying the product name, ingredients, weight and regulatory copy. This is a genuinely different specification from a decorative sticker, since it must survive contact with the product, the customer's hands, and often moisture.

Managing variants without reprinting. If you sell one product in eight scents, printing eight box versions means eight minimum runs and eight inventory lines. Printing one box and eight variant stickers means one run and eight cheap label lines. This is the single most useful cost lever available to small brands, and almost nobody explains it.

Handling and compliance marks. Fragile, this way up, keep refrigerated, batch codes, and best-before dates. Functional, unglamorous, and frequently forgotten until a shipment needs them.

Inclusions and giveaways. Loose stickers inside the box as a small extra. Cheap, well received, and one of the few packaging additions customers actually keep.

The Economics: Sticker on a Plain Box vs a Printed Box

Worth being direct about this, because it is the question behind most enquiries, and the answer sometimes costs us a bigger order.

Plain box plus sticker wins when you are launching and testing, when your run is small, when your design is a logo rather than full-surface artwork, when you sell many variants of one product, or when your brand identity is minimal and a kraft box with one clean mark is genuinely the look you want.

A printed box wins when your artwork covers most of the surface, when you want a printed interior, when the sticker would need to be so large you are effectively paying to cover the box anyway, when volume brings the printed unit cost down close to the plain-plus-sticker total, or when you want the finish options soft touch, foil or spot UV that only printing on the box itself gives you.

The crossover point moves with quantity and design coverage. Send us both scenarios and we will price them side by side rather than steering you toward the larger invoice.

The Part Other Sticker Printers Skip: Will It Actually Stick?

Adhesion depends on the surface, and packaging surfaces are harder than the laptops and drink bottles most sticker guides assume.

Uncoated kraft and natural brown board are porous and fibrous. The adhesive has to bond to a surface that is slightly dusty with loose fibre and that absorbs rather than presents a smooth face. A standard permanent adhesive often looks fine on application and lifts at the edges a day later. High-tack adhesive is the answer, and it is the single most common fix we specify.

Corrugated adds texture on top of porosity. On coarse flutes the liner dips very slightly between the arches, so a large rigid sticker can bridge the low points instead of contacting them. Smaller stickers, flexible face materials and high-tack adhesive all help. The E-flute is a much easier surface than the C-flute.

Laminated boxes run the opposite risk. Gloss lamination is smooth and generally straightforward. Matte and soft-touch films are more variable, and soft-touch in particular can be a difficult surface for adhesives because of the coating that produces the texture. If you are applying stickers to soft-touch laminated packaging, test before you commit to a run; we will send samples for exactly this.

Cold matters in Canada. Adhesive tack drops as temperature falls, and a sticker applied in an unheated warehouse in January may not bond the way it did on a bench in July. Apply at room temperature where possible, and specify a cold-temperature adhesive if your fulfilment space is unheated or your product ships refrigerated or frozen.

Curved and small surfaces need a flexible face material and a smaller footprint. A rigid sticker on a tight curve lifts at the edges every time.

Tell us the surface when you enquire, not just the size. It is the variable that decides whether the order works.

Materials

White vinyl is the durable all-rounder: waterproof, tear-resistant, and with a UV laminate, it holds up outdoors for years. The standard choice for anything that needs to last or gets handled hard.

BOPP (polypropylene) is a thinner film widely used for product labels. Waterproof and well suited to packaging and indoor use, and more economical than vinyl at label volumes. It is generally not the choice for long-term outdoor exposure.

Paper and kraft paper stock are the most economical and give a natural, uncoated look that suits artisan and eco-positioned brands. They are not waterproof and will not survive moisture, so keep them to dry indoor applications and box exteriors that stay dry.

Clear vinyl creates a no-label look on glass and smooth surfaces. Colours print translucent over the background, so if you need opaque colour or crisp small type on a dark surface, specify a white ink underprint.

Holographic and metallic films shift colour in the light and read premium. Effective in small doses on a seal or a logo mark, overwhelming across a large area.

Foil and specialty stocks give metallic detail on a label where the box itself is unprinted.

Cut Formats

The die cut stickers are cut through both the face material and the backing, producing individual stickers in the exact shape of the design. Best for handing out, selling, or including loose in packaging.

Kiss cut stickers are cut through the face material only, leaving the backing intact. The surrounding border makes them far easier to peel, protects delicate edges, and allows more intricate cut shapes because the backing holds everything in place. This is the right choice for anything applied by hand at speed.

Sheets carry multiple stickers on one backing, either repeating one design or grouping several. Good for variant labels, seasonal sets and giveaways.

Rolls feed standard label dispensers and applicators. If you are applying more than a few hundred labels a week by hand, rolls will save more in labour than they cost.

The practical rule: rolls for volume application, kiss cuts for hand application, and die cuts for anything the customer receives loose.

Finishes

Gloss maximizes colour saturation and wipes clean. Matte removes shine for a restrained look and takes a pen, which matters for batch codes and best-before dates written by hand. Soft touch gives a velvet surface on premium labels. Clear laminate adds scuff and moisture protection over any of them and is what turns a durable material into a long-lasting one. Spot UV and foil add contrast detail on a label the same way they do on a box.

For product labels that will be handled repeatedly or exposed to moisture, laminate is not optional.

Artwork Requirements

Supply vector artwork where possible, since cut lines need clean paths. Include 3mm bleed beyond the cut line, and keep text and critical detail at least 3mm inside it. Supply your cut line as a separate named path rather than leaving us to interpret the edge of the design. Build in CMYK and specify PMS colours explicitly. If you are printing on clear or metallic material and need opaque colour, specify a white underprint layer. Avoid very fine detail on small die-cut shapes, since cutting tolerance limits how intricate an outline can be, and kiss-cut handles complexity better than die-cut for that reason.

If you do not have print-ready artwork, our design team will prepare it at no charge.

A Canadian Requirement Worth Knowing

If your sticker is the product label on a prepackaged consumer product sold in Canada, bilingual labelling requirements apply to much of the mandatory information in English and French under federal packaging and labelling rules. The details vary by product category, and food, cosmetics, natural health products and cannabis each carry additional category-specific requirements.

We are packaging printers rather than regulatory consultants, so we will not tell you what your label must say. What we will do is flag it if your artwork looks like a consumer product label with English-only mandatory copy, because it is far cheaper to catch before printing. Check current requirements with the CFIA or Health Canada for your category, or with a labelling consultant, and send us the finalized copy.

Practically, bilingual copy needs planning: it takes roughly twice the space, which affects label size, type size and layout. Design for it from the start rather than shrinking the type afterwards.

Our Sticker and Label Range

Box seal stickers in die-cut or kiss-cut format, sized for mailer closures and tuck-end flaps, with high-tack adhesive for kraft and corrugated surfaces.

Product labels on BOPP or vinyl for jars, bottles, tins, soap bars and candle vessels, supplied on rolls or sheets depending on how you apply them.

Logo and branding stickers for plain mailer boxes, shipping cartons and tissue, in any shape.

Variant and scent labels for brands running one box across multiple product versions.

Sheet stickers and inclusions for loose extras inside packaging.

Handling and compliance marks, including fragile, orientation and batch code labels.

Pair these with our corrugated mailer boxes, kraft and white cardboard cartons, or any plain box in our range. If you are unsure whether stickers or printing serves you better, our cardboard packaging and corrugated packaging pages set out what printing directly on the box gives you.

Industries

Soap, candle and bath brands use labels for base marks and ingredient copy. Food and beverage producers use them for jars, pouches and bilingual product labels. Cosmetics and skincare brands use variant labels across a shared carton. Coffee and tea roasters use roll labels for bag sealing and batch information. Subscription and eCommerce brands use seal stickers on plain mailers. Artists, makers and small retailers use die-cut stickers as products in their own right.

Choosing Your Specification

Define the job first seal, label, brand mark or giveaway. Then name the surface it goes on, because kraft, corrugated, glass and laminated board each need a different adhesive. Then decide how it gets applied: by hand in small numbers points to kiss cut sheets, by volume points to rolls. Then pick the material against exposure paper for dry indoor use, BOPP for packaging labels, vinyl where durability or moisture matter. Finish last, and laminate anything that gets handled.

Working With Us

Minimums start at 50 units, so testing a design costs very little. Custom shapes and cutting are included in the quoted price rather than charged as tooling. Design support is free, including cut line setup and artwork preparation. Every order gets a free digital proof, with physical samples available on request worth taking whenever adhesion to a specific surface is in question. With the right adhesive, yes. Uncoated kraft is porous and fibrous, so a standard permanent adhesive can lift at the edges. Specify high-tack for kraft and corrugated surfaces.

Die cut is cut through the backing into individual shapes best for loose stickers. Kiss cut leaves the backing intact, which makes peeling far faster and protects intricate edges.

Rolls feed label dispensers and suit volume application. Sheets and kiss cut suit hand application, mixed designs and smaller runs.

Paper for economical dry indoor use, BOPP for product labels and packaging, vinyl where durability or moisture resistance matters. Laminate anything that gets handled repeatedly.

Vinyl and BOPP are, especially with a clear laminate. Paper and kraft stocks are not, so keep those to dry applications.

Usually at low volumes and with logo-led designs. Printed boxes win as quantity rises or artwork coverage grows. Send both scenarios and we will price them side by side.

Yes, Destructible or high-tack tamper-evident materials break or leave residue when removed, which is what makes a seal meaningful.

Much of the mandatory copy on prepackaged consumer products sold in Canada must appear in English and French. Requirements vary by category confirm with the CFIA or Health Canada before finalizing artwork.

Sometimes, but soft touch coatings can be a difficult surface for adhesives. Always request a sample test before committing to a full run on laminated packaging.
