Custom Pet Food Boxes That Don't Bleed Oil, Bow or Get Chewed Through
Three things go wrong with pet food packaging, and they're all invisible at the quoting stage.
Fat migrates. A 20% crude fat treat sitting in untreated paperboard produces dark translucent patches within a week, and the customer reads that as spoilt product. Bottoms fail a 2kg bag of kibble in a tuck-end carton eventually pushes through. And pests get in: pantry moths and grain beetles chew unsealed board in warehouses and pet-store stockrooms, and a single infestation can write off a pallet.
Custom pet food boxes from CustomBoxesZone Canada are specified against all three. Grease barrier matched to your fat content, closure rated to your fill weight, and construction that doesn't hand insects an open door. MOQ 50, free design, free shipping Canada-wide.
What Are Custom Pet Food Boxes?
Custom pet food boxes are food-safe paperboard or corrugated cartons made to your product's fill weight and format, with a grease barrier suited to the fat content and panel space planned around mandatory feeding and nutritional information. For most dry products, custom pet food boxes work as a system with an inner bag or liner: the liner handles moisture and oxygen, the carton handles structure, stacking, and everything the customer reads.
That distinction matters. Any supplier telling you a bare carton keeps kibble fresh for twelve months is overselling, and we'd rather you heard that now than after a shelf-life complaint.
Every Pet Format We Package
Custom Dog Food Boxes
The highest-volume item in the range. Dry kibble, biscuits, dental chews, bones, and puppy and senior formulas. The structural point: dog food is heavy. A 2 kg fill in a standard tuck-end carton concentrates all that weight on two folded flaps. Our custom pet food boxes for dog food default to auto-lock or 1-2-3 bottoms above 1.5 kg, because a bottom blowout in a retail aisle is a mess someone has to clean up while your brand name sits in the middle of it.
Custom Cat Food Boxes
Multipack cartons for pouches and cans, plus dry cat food and treats. The honest technical point: for wet food, the carton is a secondary pack the pouch or can is the barrier, and the box is doing structure and shelf communication. For dry cat food and treats, the fat content is typically high, and the grease barrier is what matters. We spec differently for each; treating them the same is how suppliers get it wrong.
Pet Treat and Chew Boxes
Small-format, high-margin, high-fat. Jerky, training treats, soft chews, and dental sticks. These are the custom pet food boxes where oil bleed shows fastest, because treats sit at 15–25% fat and often ship with visible surface oil. Barrier-coated interior, always. Window options work well here treats look appetising, and shoppers want to see the piece size.
Freeze-Dried and Raw Pet Food Boxes
Growing fast, and the most demanding technically. Freeze-dried product is fragile and moisture-hungry; raw is frozen and produces condensation on thaw. These custom pet food boxes need either a high-barrier liner or, for frozen, a moisture-resistant coated board that won't wick when the product sweats.
Pet Supplement Boxes
Joint supplements, probiotics, calming aids, and vitamin chews. The panel point: supplements carry the heaviest text load in the whole pet category, including active ingredients, dosing by body weight, and cautions. Plan the hierarchy before the graphics, not after.
Custom Poultry Feed Boxes
Layer feed, chick starter, scratch grains, and supplements for backyard flocks are a segment that has grown enormously and is badly served by generic sacks. These are heavier still, so E-flute corrugated with a reinforced base is the default. Handle die-cuts are worth specifying; nobody wants to carry 5 kg of feed by hugging a carton.
Turtle Food, Fish Food, and Small Animal Boxes
Speciality custom pet food boxes for pellets, flakes, vitamins, and small-mammal feed. Small runs, high SKU counts. Our MOQ of 50 exists precisely for this an exotics brand with fourteen SKUs shouldn't need a pallet of each.
Bird Seed Boxes
Loose seed needs either a liner or a tight-seamed carton, because seed finds every gap. We spec glued side seams rather than tucked, and a pour-spout perforation if the customer will be refilling a feeder.
Pet Food Subscription Mailers
DTC pet food is one of the fastest-growing channels in Canada. A retail carton is not a shipper it arrives scuffed and dented. We build E-flute mailers sized to your retail custom pet food boxes or self-shipping cartons with printed interiors for the unboxing moment.
Fill Weights and Box Sizes
Every one of our custom pet food boxes is made to your product, but these are common starting points.
| Product | Fill weight | Typical box size (H × W × D) |
|---|---|---|
| Training treats | 100–200 g | 5" × 3.5" × 2" |
| Treat pouch carton | 300–500 g | 7" × 5" × 2.5" |
| Dry cat food | 1 kg | 9" × 6" × 3" |
| Dry dog food, small | 1.5 kg | 10" × 7" × 3.5" |
| Dry dog food, standard | 2.5 kg | 12" × 8" × 4" |
| Dry dog food, large | 5 kg | 14" × 10" × 5" |
| Poultry feed | 5 kg | 14" × 10" × 6" |
| Wet food multipack (12) | - | 10" × 7.5" × 3" |
| Freeze-dried raw | 400 g | 8" × 6" × 2.5" |
| Turtle / fish pellets | 100 g | 4" × 3" × 2" |
Sizing rule: kibble settles 5–10% in transit. Size to the settled volume, or your box looks underfilled on the shelf, and "underfilled" is a complaint that reaches your inbox, not Google's.
The Three Failures Nobody Else Writes About
Fat and oil migration
This is the one that costs money quietly. Pet food and treats run far higher in fat than most human packaged food commonly 12–25% crude fat, and higher in premium and raw-inspired lines. Untreated paperboard absorbs that oil, and within a week you get dark translucent patches, softened board, and lifted ink.
Barrier options for custom pet food boxes, matched to fat content:
- Clay-coated board (C1S/C2S) good barrier, fully recyclable, right for most dry food under 15% fat.
- Greaseproof-lined board for high-fat treats, jerky, and freeze-dried raw.
- PE-lined highest barrier, but not curbside recyclable in most Canadian municipalities.
- Inner liner bag the standard solution for loose kibble; the bag carries the barrier and the carton carries the brand.
- Uncoated kraft lowest barrier, best recyclability. Beautiful for low-fat biscuits, wrong for jerky.
Tell us your crude fat percentage at the briefing. It's the single most useful number you can give us, and almost nobody thinks to.
Pests
Pantry moths, grain beetles, and mites are an ongoing problem in pet food warehousing. Larvae chew through unsealed paperboard and glued seams. Custom pet food boxes can't be insect-proof on their own, but construction choices genuinely help: fully glued side seams rather than tucked, tight-tolerance closures with no gaping, and an inner liner that presents a second barrier. Combined with your warehouse rotation, that's most of the practical defence available.
Aroma
Aroma cuts both ways. Palatability is partly aroma-driven, so a pack that vents its smell loses appeal to the pet. But a retail shelf where every pet food carton smells strongly is a shelf retailers complain about. A barrier board and a sealed liner hold aroma in; an uncoated board lets it out. Decide deliberately rather than by default.
Labelling Plan the Panels Before the Graphics
Pet food carries a heavy information load, and it's the most common cause of last-minute redesign on custom pet food boxes.
For Canada, pet food is not regulated under the same federal framework as human food, but the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act and the Competition Act still apply to how you label and what you claim, and most credible Canadian brands voluntarily follow the AAFCO model used in the US, because retailers and informed pet owners expect it.
Plan panel space for:
- Bilingual English and French for mandatory information
- Product identity and species which animal, and what life stage
- Guaranteed analysis crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, moisture, as a table
- Ingredient list, descending by weight
- Nutritional adequacy statement the "complete and balanced" claim and the standard it's measured against
- Feeding directions usually a body-weight table, which needs real width to stay legible
- Net quantity in metric
- Manufacturer or distributor name and address
- Lot code and best-before, with a matte or uncoated zone the ink will actually adhere to
- Calorie content statement, where you're making one
Bilingual guaranteed-analysis and feeding tables consume far more panel area than brands expect, commonly 40–60% more than a US-only equivalent. Give us this at the die-line stage, and it fits comfortably. Give it to us at proofing, and something gets shrunk to unreadable type.
We don't provide regulatory advice. Have your own advisor confirm your claims and adequacy statements before we go to plate.
Materials
| Material | Best for | Key property |
|---|---|---|
| Coated SBS (16–24pt) | Retail treat and dry food cartons | Bright print surface, grease resistance |
| E-flute corrugated | 2kg+ fills, poultry feed, shippers | Crush and stacking strength |
| Kraft board | Natural, organic, small-batch brands | Recyclable, on-brand, low barrier |
| Barrier-coated board | High-fat treats, jerky, raw | Blocks oil migration |
| Rigid stock | Premium gift sets and subscription boxes | Structure and hand-feel |
All materials used in our custom pet food boxes are food-contact-approved with low-migration soy-based inks which matters more here than people assume, because pets chew packaging. FSC-certified and recycled options are available across the range, and mono-material recyclable builds are worth choosing where your fat content allows, given provincial EPR reporting.
Printing and Finishing
Printing: offset CMYK for volume, digital for short runs and SKU variants, plus up to 2 PMS spot colours. Pet brands typically run many SKUs across one shelf a colour-coded range only works if the colours are identical batch to batch, which means spot colour for your base.
Finishes: gloss, matte, and soft-touch lamination; aqueous coating; gloss and matte UV; spot UV; foil stamping; embossing and debossing.
What works: matte or soft-touch with a spot-UV logo is the premium and natural-brand default it photographs well, and pet products get photographed constantly. Gloss and aqueous suit mainstream and value ranges where colour saturation drives the shelf grab. Kraft with two-colour print is the reliable signal for small-batch and grain-free positioning. Avoid heavy lamination anywhere you'll be date-coding.
Free structural and graphic design comes with every order of custom pet food boxes, plus 3D mock-ups and physical samples on request.
Wholesale and Ordering
Buying custom pet food boxes wholesale lowers unit cost through amortised setup, volume board pricing, and consolidated freight with meaningful drops at 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 units. Most pet brands run multiple SKUs, so consolidating several die-lines into one production run is usually the fastest saving available.
Our minimum is 50 boxes, which exists for exotics brands, small-batch treat makers, and anyone testing a SKU before committing.

Serving Pet Brands Across Canada
We ship custom pet food boxes free to every province and territory, with regular orders from Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Surrey, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Halifax. Canada's independent treat and freeze-dried raw scene is one of our busiest segments with small producers moving from resealable pouches into retail-ready cartons for the first time.
Cartons ship flat and pre-glued, which cuts freight volume sharply and stores compactly. That matters in this sector specifically: pet food producers usually have more product volume than storage space.
