Custom Cake Boxes Engineered for Fridge and Drive Home

Ask any baker where packaging fails, and you'll hear the same two answers: It went soft in the fridge, or the cake slid on the way home. Almost every supplier of custom cake boxes sells on appearance. Almost none of them solve either problem.

CustomBoxesZone Canada builds custom cake boxes around what actually happens after the cake leaves your counter refrigeration, condensation, a car seat, a bumpy road, and a customer who tilts the box to fit it through a doorway. Nine formats, any size, food-safe and grease-barrier board, MOQ 50, free design, and free shipping across Canada.

What Are Custom Cake Boxes?

Custom cake boxes are food-safe paperboard or corrugated containers built to your cake board dimensions, with a rigid base, grease-resistant lining, and moisture protection suited to refrigerated storage. Unlike stock bakery cartons, custom cake boxes are sized to your specific board and cake height, which is what stops the product sliding, leaning, or touching the lid in transit.

Every Cake Box Format We Produce

Format is a physics decision as much as a design one. Here's what each of our custom cake boxes is engineered for.

Standard Cake Boxes

The everyday one-piece or two-piece bakery carton for round and square cakes. These custom cake boxes are specified on base rigidity first — a base that flexes when lifted lets the cake shift, and a shifted cake means damaged icing. For anything over 1kg we recommend E-flute corrugated or a double-thickness base insert.

Cake Boxes with Window

A die-cut aperture with food-safe PET film. Window custom cake boxes drive impulse purchase in retail display cases, but there's a caveat most suppliers skip: film fogs in refrigeration. We use anti-fog PET film where you're chilling the product, and keep the aperture proportionate so the panel doesn't lose rigidity around the cut.

Tall Cake Boxes

Extra-height walls for layered, tiered, and heavily decorated cakes. These are the most structurally demanding custom cake boxes in the range. A tall cake has a high centre of gravity, so the base has to be stiff and the walls have to resist bowing. We build these with reinforced corner scoring and, on request, a non-slip base pad that stops the cake board sliding inside the carton.

Handle Cake Boxes

Carry-handle custom cake boxes for takeaway and delivery. The critical spec here is load rating. A handle that tears mid-carry is the worst possible failure we reinforce handle die-cuts and spec board weight against your actual filled weight, not the empty box.

Four Corner Cake Boxes

Fast-assembly one-piece custom cake boxes that fold up from a flat blank with locking corners. Best for high-volume bakeries where assembly speed matters staff can build these in seconds, and they store completely flat.

Self Lock Cake Boxes

Tuck-and-lock closure that stays shut without tape. Clean-looking, quick to assemble, and popular for retail-facing custom cake boxes where a taped seam would look unfinished.

Custom Cupcake Boxes

Multi-cavity custom cake boxes with fitted inserts for 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, or 24 cupcakes. Cavity depth clears the swirl, and the divider walls stop frosting touching frosting the single most common cupcake complaint. Available with windows for display cases.

Christmas Cupcake Boxes

Seasonal artwork over your standard die-line. No new tooling required we update the print, keep the structure, and your unit cost stays flat.

Custom Macaron Boxes

Precision-cavity custom cake boxes for the most fragile item in any bakery. Macarons crack under almost no pressure and scuff against each other instantly. Cavity fit has to be snug with zero lateral play, and the lid must not press down on the shells.

Custom Pastry Boxes

Shallow, wide custom cake boxes for danishes, croissants, éclairs, and mixed pastry assortments. Grease barrier matters most here butter-laminated pastry will bleed through untreated board within an hour.

Custom Pie Boxes

Round or square with a snug internal fit. Pies are heavy relative to their footprint, so base strength drives the spec. Window options for fruit and lattice pies.

Custom Cake Bites and Cake Pop Boxes

Small-format custom cake boxes with individual wells. Cake pops need a die-cut hole to hold the stick upright laid flat, the coating cracks and the pop separates from the stick.

Cake Delivery Shippers

For bakeries shipping direct to consumers, a retail carton isn't enough. We build corrugated outer shippers sized to your retail custom cake boxes, with void-fill inserts and cold-pack cavities where needed.

Cake Box Sizes The Cake Board Rule

The most common sizing mistake in bakery packaging is measuring the cake. Size to the cake board, not the cake. Then add clearance.

The rule: box interior = cake board diameter + 1", and box height = cake height + 1" to 1.5". That clearance keeps icing off the walls and lid, and gives staff room to lift the cake in without smudging.

Cake board size Recommended box (L × W × H)
6" round 7" × 7" × 5"
8" round 9" × 9" × 5"
10" round 11" × 11" × 5"
12" round 13" × 13" × 6"
14" round 15" × 15" × 6"
Tall / 2-tier 12" × 12" × 12"
Quarter sheet 10" × 14" × 4"
Half sheet 14" × 19" × 5"
6 cupcakes 10" × 7" × 4"
12 cupcakes 14" × 10" × 4"
12 macarons 8" × 3" × 2"

Every one of our custom cake boxes is made to your exact measurements this table is a starting reference, not a limit.

The Two Problems Nobody Else Writes About

Refrigeration and condensation

This is the one that quietly ruins cartons. When a cake goes into a fridge, warm air inside the box cools and condenses. That moisture lands on the board, and untreated paperboard wicks it straight up corners soften, printed panels blister, and by the next morning the box has lost its structure.

Our answer for refrigerated custom cake boxes: moisture-resistant coated board, clay-coated interior faces, and where you're chilling for extended periods, a poly or aqueous barrier coating on the inside surface. We'll also recommend against uncoated kraft for anything going into a display fridge it looks beautiful and it fails fastest.

If you're using a window, specify anti-fog film. Standard PET fogs within minutes of refrigeration and your beautiful display cake becomes invisible.

Grease, matched to your icing

Not all icing behaves the same way against board.

  • Buttercream and ganache high fat content, the most aggressive. Needs a clay-coated or greaseproof-lined interior.
  • Fondant and royal icing low fat, low grease risk, but fondant sweats in humidity, so moisture resistance matters more than grease resistance.
  • Cream cheese frosting high fat plus high moisture. The hardest combination. Barrier-coated board only.
  • Laminated pastry (croissant, danish) pure butter bleed. Greaseproof liner or barrier board, always.

Tell us what's going in the box and we'll match the barrier. Most suppliers quote one board for everything.

Materials

Material Best for Key property
Coated SBS paperboard (16–24pt) Standard retail cake boxes Bright print surface, grease resistance
E-flute corrugated Large, heavy, and tall cakes Crush and impact strength
Kraft board Artisan and organic bakeries Natural finish, recyclable
Rigid stock Premium gift and wedding cakes Maximum structure, luxury feel
Barrier-coated board Buttercream, ganache, refrigerated Blocks grease and moisture

All materials used in our custom cake boxes are food-contact-approved and meet Canadian Food Inspection Agency requirements, printed with soy-based, low-migration inks. FSC-certified and recycled stocks are available across the range.

Printing and Finishing

Printing: offset CMYK for volume, digital for short runs and seasonal variants, plus up to 2 PMS spot colours for exact brand matching across your full range of custom cake boxes.

Finishes: gloss, matte, and soft-touch lamination; aqueous coating; gloss and matte UV; spot UV; hot foil stamping in gold, silver, rose gold, or holographic; embossing and debossing.

What actually works in bakery: matte with foil-stamped type is the most reliable premium signal wedding and patisserie brands live there. Gloss or aqueous suits bright, playful, kid-focused bakeries. Kraft with a single-colour stamp is the standard for artisan positioning. One practical warning: heavy gloss lamination shows every fingerprint, and cake boxes get handled constantly by staff with buttercream on their hands.

Free structural and graphic design comes with every order of custom cake boxes, plus a 3D digital mock-up before production and physical samples on request.

Canadian Labelling for Prepackaged Bakery

If your custom cake boxes are sold prepackaged at retail rather than made to order at a counter, they carry mandatory labelling:

  • Bilingual English and French for all required information
  • Ingredient list, descending by weight, bilingual
  • Allergen declaration wheat, egg, milk, nuts, soy plus "may contain" cross-contamination statements. Bakeries are one of the highest cross-contamination environments in food, so this panel is not optional.
  • Net quantity in metric
  • Best-before date with a coding zone the ink will actually adhere to leave a matte or uncoated area for it
  • Nutrition Facts table, where applicable to your product and business size

We plan panel space for all of this at die-line stage so nothing gets squeezed at proofing.

Wholesale Ordering

Buying custom cake boxes wholesale lowers unit cost through amortised setup, volume board pricing, and consolidated freight with meaningful drops at 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units. Bakeries typically order two or three sizes at once and consolidate the freight, which is the fastest saving available.

That said, our minimum is 50 boxes. A home baker going commercial, or a café testing a new dessert line, shouldn't need to commit to a pallet. Start small, prove the size, scale into volume.

Serving Bakeries Across Canada

We ship custom cake boxes free to every province and territory, with regular orders from bakeries in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Ottawa, Hamilton, Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver, Surrey, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Halifax.

Boxes ship flat, which cuts freight volume sharply and matters more in bakery than most sectors. Commercial kitchen storage is tight, and a pallet of pre-assembled cake boxes eats space you need for ingredients.
